How to Factory Data Reset (FDR) or Reboot Your Chromecast

The Factory Data Reset (FDR) will reset the Chromecast device to its default factory settings and will clear your data and can’t be undone. I will show steps perform a factory data reset (FDR) on your Chromecast by using the two methods listed below, please choose your chromecast version.

Chromecast (1st generation)

  1. Open the Google Home app Chromecast cast icon. See: Install Google Home on Windows
  2. In the upper right corner of the home screen, tap Devices  to see your available Chromecast devices.
  3. In the top right corner of the device you’d like to FDR, tap the device card menu  > Settings.
  4. In the top right corner, tap the More button .
  5. If on Android, tap Factory reset. If on iOS, tap Reset.
  6. Confirm you would like to reset your device by tapping Reset.

From the Chromecast device: While the Chromecast is plugged into the TV, hold down the button on the Chromecast for at least 25 seconds or until the solid LED light begins flashing on the Chromecast device and the TV goes blank and begins the reboot sequence.

Chromecast

  1. Open the Google Home app Chromecast cast icon. See: Install Google Home on Windows
  2. In the upper right corner of the home screen, tap Devices  to see your available Chromecast devices.
  3. In the top right corner of the device you’d like to FDR, tap the device card menu  > Settings.
  4. In the top right corner, tap the More button .
  5. If on Android, tap Factory reset. If on iOS, tap Reset.
  6. Confirm you would like to reset your device by tapping Reset.

From the Chromecast device: While the Chromecast is plugged into the TV, hold down the button on the side of the Chromecast. The LED will begin blinking orange. When the LED light turns white, release the button and the Chromecast will begin the reboot sequence.

How to Reboot your Chromecast device

Rebooting your Chromecast device may fix several issues. There are two ways to reboot your Chromecast device:

Option 1 – from the Google Home app: 

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi as your Chromecast device.
  2. Open the Google Home app Chromecast cast icon.
  3. In the upper right corner of the home screen, tap Devices  to see your available Chromecast devices.
  4. In the top right corner of the device you’d like to reboot, tap the device card menu  >  Settings.
  5. In the top right corner of the Device Settings page, tap the More button  > Reboot.

Option 2: 

  1. Unplug the power cord from the Chromecast device.
  2.  Leave it unplugged for ~1 minute.
  3.  Plug the power cord back in.

Note: Unplugging the Chromecast from the TV’s HDMI port does not reboot the device. It must be disconnected from the power source in order to reboot.
